On microfoundations of the city
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper considers the spatial structure of a city subject to nal demand and vertical linkages. Individuals consume di¤erentiated goods (or services) and rms purchase di¤erentiated inputs (or services) in product (or service) markets where rms compete under monopolistic competition. Workers rent their residential lots in an urban land market and contribute to the production of di¤erentiated goods and inputs. We show that rms and workers co-agglomerate and endogenously form a city. We characterize and discuss the spatial distribution of rms and consumers in such cities on oneand two-dimensional spaces. We show that nal demand and vertical linkages raise the urban density and reduce the city spread. Keywords: co-agglomeration, continuous distribution, new economic geography, forward and backward linkages, housing space. J.E.L. Classi cation: C62, F12, R12. We thank V. Couture, G. Duranton, M. Which Way Forward for Macroeconomics and Policy Analysis?
There was a palpable sense of excitement among the economists who met in Philadelphia in 1969 at the conference organized by Edmund Phelps. Their research over the preceding years had coalesced into a new approach to macroeconomic analysis, one that based macrorelationships on explicit microfoundations. These foundations’ distinctive feature was to accord market participants’ expectations an au...
متن کاملUsing Multilevel Modeling and Mixed Methods to Make Theoretical Progress in Microfoundations for Strategy Research
The microfoundations research agenda presents an expanded theoretical perspective because it considers individuals, their characteristics, and their interactions as relevant variables to help us understand firm-level strategic issues. However, microfoundations empirical research faces unique challenges because processes take place at different levels of analysis and these multilevel processes m...
متن کاملImplicit Microfoundations for Macroeconomics
A large market economy has a huge number of degrees of freedom with weak microlevel coordination. The ‘implicit microfoundations’ approach considers this property of micro-level interactions to more strongly determine macro-level outcomes compared to the precise details of individual choice behavior; that is, the ‘particle’ nature of individuals dominates their ‘mechanical’ nature. So rather th...
متن کاملThe Microfoundations of Macroeconomics
We consider the microfoundations controversy from the perspective of economic evolution and show that the debate can benefit from lessons learned in evolutionary biology. Although the analogy between biology and economics has been noted before, it has rarely focused on clarifying the micro-macro distinction in economic theory and modelling. The macroevolution controversy in biology has generate...
